The village of Afionas perches on a long, narrow promontory—a peninsula that overlooks Agios Georgios Bay in the island’s north-western corner, just 45 minutes from Corfu Town.
The settlement offers stunning vistas across the surrounding hills, out to sea and towards the small islands of Kravia, Sikia and Gineka, as well as the Diapontie Islands of Mathraki, Othonoi and Erikoussa.
True to its traditional character, Afionas boasts narrow streets and alleyways lined with bougainvillea-draped houses and a handful of small shops. Perched 300 metres above sea level, the village has been inhabited since ancient times—excavations at Akri Arilla testify to its Neolithic origins.
A path winds from the village down through the promontory to Porto Timoni, an ancient harbour where you’ll discover a charming, traditional tiny church built into the rock, reached via a fairly adventurous 30-minute walk. Here you’ll find two beautiful beaches separated by a narrow strip of tree-covered land. Legend has it that King Pyrrhus of Epirus built a fortress in this area around 300 BC, though the remains have yet to be discovered.
