Perched on Corfu’s western coastline, just above Glyfada beach some 26 kilometres from the island’s capital, stands the Moni Theotokou monastery. This striking architectural complex crowns a dramatic promontory dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was constructed between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, built atop ancient ruins dating back to 1200.
Set amidst unspoilt natural surroundings and overlooking the sea, the monastery is adorned with vibrant bougainvillea and ranks among the island’s most visited attractions. Within the intimate chapel, you’ll find a stunning ceiling depicting the Tree of Life and a moving Last Judgment fresco. The museum is equally worthwhile, featuring rotating exhibitions including Byzantine icons and rare manuscripts.
The monastery’s cloistered garden with its pergola is particularly charming, as is the striking Venetian-style bell tower. Just beyond the monastery, a traditional taverna offers spectacular views across the water.
