Porto Timoni comprises two hidden coves nestled beneath the Afionas promontory, perfect for those seeking solitude and pristine waters.
Not particularly easy to reach unless by boat – the path down to these inlets is rather steep, narrow and demanding, requiring at least 30 minutes of hiking in closed, non-slip footwear – historically, these would have served as sheltered bays, offering protection from storms and pirates for seafarers, given their natural formation and narrow entrance channel.
The larger of the two bays boasts a stunning golden sandy beach with crystal-clear waters ideal for snorkelling, opening out onto the open sea, whilst the smaller one, equally sandy and separated from the larger by a corridor of shrubs and bushes, overlooks the Agios Giorgios inlet.
Legend has it that a fortress once stood in the Porto Timoni area, supposedly built around 300 BC by Pyrrhus, King of Epirus, yet to date these claims, despite several archaeological excavations that have uncovered a considerably older settlement dating back 3,000 BC to the Neolithic period, remain unsubstantiated.
